These are the same things that draw her to working as a quilt artist.
“Stories in Fabric” is a performance presentation, illustrated with plentiful pictures in a power point. It features stories from quilters past and present,
taken from diaries and other sources. I speak about how women wanted to be remembered, the need to create beauty, and the stories quilters past and present put in their quilts. So I guess it's about...love! The love of quilting and why we do it.

July 8, 2019 - 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. - Colleen Powers
Colleen Powers, member of the Western Reserve Quilt Guild, is a modern quilt maker and a high-energy presenter. She comes highly recommended to us by members of her guild, a group of many traditional quilters, who confess they’ve had their eyes opened and can appreciate the style and techniques used in “modern” quilting. Her presentation will focus on:Modern Quilting: An Overview of Characteristics, Color Theory, and Improvisational Techniques
- Explore unique attributes of modern quilts
- Learn how to create your own improvisational masterpieces using color theory principles
- See a trunk show of Colleen’s modern quilts which offer examples of techniques
June 10, 2019 - 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. - Westalee Ruler Work
So...what's all the hype about rulers for your domestic sewing machine? Doreen Kuster will be telling you everything you need to know to get started in the latest thing to hit the quilting scene. This includes types of feet, machine height, thread and needles, quilt markings and practice. She will also demo making a few of the designs and will have samples of patterns using the Template Sampler Set. They recommend you know how to free motion quilt, but honestly, using ruler templates are easier than free motion quilting. Not to take anything away from those who longarm, this gives you another option for those that want to quilt their tops themselves. If you are interested in learning more, make sure you attend the meeting June 10th.

Monday, November 13, 2017 - 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. - Jean K's Grandma's Aprons
Grandma’s Apron - There’s a rich and long tradition of wearing aprons – by tradesmen, artisans and cooks. Jean’s Grandma Jessie – a strong farm woman with a strong Irish spirit – always wore aprons in the kitchen and while doing other food-related tasks like making apple butter outdoors in the copper cauldron and gathering eggs. Jessie was a wife, mother, grandmother and midwife…generous in her love for the grandchildren and rich in her cooking skills. Mmm….can you smell your Grandma’s kitchen?
The history of aprons is documented before Christ. Jean will walk us through some of that history, share a few sentimental photos of her apron-clad Grandma, as well as share over 30 vintage and vintage-style aprons.
Do you have a favorite apron, a family treasure, you’d like to share with members oat the meeting? Please bring it!
Also, bring any projects you have completed toward your PhD degree.

Monday, September 12, 2016 - 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. - Field Trip - J'Ellen
We are hitting the road and carpooling to JEllen's House of Fabric 2171 S Green Road, University Hts. BUT first we are going to supper at Jack's Deli and Restaurant 14490 Cedar Road in University. (Not the Akron Jacks)
JEllen's and Jacks are in the same shopping center at Cedar and Green Roads. They are sort of back to back.
Jack's is excellent for a corned beef or Ruben or any Jewish deli type food. Then we walk through a covered sidewalk to JEllen's. If you haven't been there it is the happiest, sweetest, cutest shop ever!! Joyce and her daughter Sarah are the best!! Check out their website and Sarah's story.
Also in the same shopping center is Pincus Bakery. It's the kind of bakery we all grew up with in Cleveland. No prices, no cash register and ladies who wait on you have heavy accents. Ok I can't resist telling this story about the bakery. A woman with a very heavy Russian accent was training a Hispanic woman and said in her heavy accent, "Tree Kookeaze for a duller".😳
There is also a large wine store near the bakery and JEllen's.
If that is not enough you will drive past Beachwood Mall and Legacy shopping center.
We can meet at the carpool area next to 303 and Route 8. What time should we meet???
What I would prefer is for you to carpool with members who live near you and go straight there. It's a 30 minute drive from Hudson. Take 271 north and exit to Cedar Road. Bear right on the exit curve and stay on Cedar heading west. When you are almost to Green Rd on your left you will see a dirt area and the driveway to Jack's. Go in and park there. Or You could also turn left on to Green and an immediate left at the next light and park in front of JEllen's.
